Let Vintage Chanel Ring Your Bell At Exclusive Covet Shop

20 October 2009 One Comment

Fashionistas, there are thousands of online boutiques, but only one Covet Shop.com, the subject of today’s Fashion Time Magazine interview. Created by a New York City based couple, the Covet Shop.com is an exclusive, high end, web based consignment boutique filled to the brim with gorgeous vintage fashions like Chanel, ou la la la, sure to delight the heart of every stylenista out there.

Fashion Time: Nancy, can you tell us something about your background and your partner’s? And how the two of you combined your talents to create Covet Shop?

Covet Shop: I have a background in fashion design and marketing and Gregg is a very talented web designer. We both share a passion for style and aesthetics and wanted to put our experiences together to create a unique business that is rare and limitless.

Fashion Time: And what is the concept behind Covet Shop?

Covet Shop: Covetshop.com is a web based consignment boutique, developed to provide savvy fashionistas designer merchandise at a fraction of the retail cost and supply sellers an easy consignment portal that would result in profitable returns. The Covet Shop concept was derived from my passion for vintage shopping and the vast array of unique finds you come across. We applied the same idea to our product offerings because everything is hand selected and a true unique gem.

Fashion Time: Vintage, vintage, vintage: Why the emphasis on vintage pieces in your store?

Covet Shop: To me a vintage piece is one that has a few good stories to tell. A vintage piece is also unique and one-of-a-kind. We love vintage pieces for these reasons but also realize that there is a market that would prefer to buy things new, from current seasons. Therefore we offer a selection of vintage and also a selection of brand new items to accommodate both types of customers.

Fashion Time: There are a myriad number of online boutiques and fashion stores, what is it about Covet Shop that stands out from the rest?

Covet Shop: We feel that in a time when the economy has hurt our beloved Fashion industry, we have found a way to help it. We sell other people’s past treasures by finding them a new owner to love them, therefore turning previous investments in to profit to be used again on new treasures, a perfect cycle.

We offer high-end fashion at a discounted price. I don’t see us as another online boutique but rather a platform to help bridge a gap between the seller who wants to clean their closet and the buyer who doesn’t want to pay retail.

Fashion Time: What factors help to determine the items you accept on consignment?

Covet Shop: Condition and brand are the most important. Style would be secondary as each customer has his or her own ideas of style.

Fashion Time: As far as Fashion goes, what pieces do you personally covet, Nancy?

Covet Shop: Right now, I am coveting all of the vintage Chanel jewelry! And the pink vintage Chanel blazer is also so gorgeous!

Fashion Time: Nancy what makes you tick? When your alarm goes off in the morning, what motivates you to rush out of bed?

Covet Shop: How can you not love getting out of bed to look at beautiful clothes and accessories?! I look forward to everyday and what each day can bring me. Some days it’s preparing all the merchandise for a photo shoot, other days is picking items out of the closets of New York’s most stylish fashionistas!

Fashion Time: If you could have any of the great fashion photographers do a spread on the Covet Shop, who would you choose and why?

Covet Shop: It would definitely be Helmut Newton. I love his erotic, stylized scenes and his “Big Nudes” series he did in the 80s. He would be able to make all our products look erotic and sexy…ultimately that’s what we all want to be.

Fashion Time: What are your five Desert Island staples?

Covet Shop: 1. Chapstick 2. Sunscreen 3. My yorkie, Leo 4. My favorite panama straw hat 5. Crackberry (of course it has to come with reception and internet connection!)

Fashion Time: Your three favorite fashion sites on the Internet are?

Covet Shop: 1. Style.com 2. NYMag.com 3. Whowhatwear.com

Fashion Time: What rules of fashion should patrons of the Covet Shop break?

Covet Shop: Don’t be afraid to put your own interpretation on the latest trends by mixing it up with vintage!

Fashion Time: Nancy, tell us about your personal style?

Covet Shop: My own personal style blends everything from luxury brands to vintage finds to create a polished, figure-flattering silhouette. I like to secure my own sense of style by taking seasonal trends and applying my aesthetic to it, a mix of sexy, playful and positively chic.

Fashion Time: What are some of the hottest fall trends appearing in your shop?

Covet Shop: Tall boots, accessories with hardware, printed dresses and lots of red!

Fashion Time: Hey ho, let’s go: What stylish city would you give your eyeteeth to visit and why?

Covet Shop: My favorite stylish city is New York, of course. It’s not just stylish from a fashion perspective but also food, architecture and nightlife, there are endless possibilities to broaden your horizons. I’m happiest right here.

Fashion Time: If love is like oxygen, then fashion is like?

Covet Shop: Water – we would dry up without it!

Fashion Time: What is your philosophy about fashion?

Covet Shop: Don’t buy every single trend of the season. Only go with what works best for you, your style and your body.

Fashion Time: The five greatest wardrobe pieces ever invented seem to be?

Covet Shop: 1. Platform Heels 2. Vests 3. Fur Jackets (faux of course) 4. Leggings 5. Skinny Jeans

Fashion Time: Innovative Designers: What three designers have influenced fashion the most in the last five years?

Covet Shop: 1. Alexander Wang 2. Phillip Lim 3. Marchesa

Fashion Time: Your favorite book you’ve read in the last six months?

Covet Shop: I do most of my reading online so I haven’t had too much time to read books in the last few months. The only book I have read is The Art of the Start, which I highly recommend to anyone who is thinking about a start up.

Fashion Time: What’s in store for the future of the Covet Shop?

Covet Shop: There could be a showroom or a retail store. An important aspect of the consignment business is the ability to physically see the merchandise, touch it and try it on. We are currently playing with this idea through pop-up Covet Shop trunk shows.

What I love about buying consignment is the gently used products were once loved by someone else. I especially love when I have a customer that wants a coat that was their grandmother’s altered. I always tell them when they wear it – it will be like getting a hug from grandma!
