Catherine Kallon: She’s blogging the Red Carpet with Style and Panache

15 May 2009 6 Comments

Catherine Kallon (left) pours her heart and soul into her Red Carpet Fashion Awards blog, her very fashionable exploration of celebrity style and glamour.

We don’t know how she does it, but she possesses a near miraculous ability to identify the catwalk  attire of the beautiful people of star-studded fame.

We thank Catherine for taking time off from her busy schedule to participate in our interview.

Fashion Time: You can ID almost every dress celebs wear. How can you do that?

Catherine Kallon: I am obsessed with fashion. It really is that simple. During the Fashion Week weeks I am literally glued to Style.com taking in all the styles. Sometimes I can look at a dress and just say “That’s Giambattista Valli” because a specific theme in the collection or material used, other times it is the celebrity that helps me find the dress.

Charlize usually always wears Dior, Renee Zellweger always wear Carolina Herrera. And there are other stars that stick to the same pool of designers also. Collections like Lanvin, Gucci, Balenciaga, Missoni, Herve Leger, Dolce & Gabbana and Elie Saab are so distinctive you only really need to look at them once on Style.com to recognise them on a celebrity.

When I am really stuck I check Instyle and People.com website, which can be very frustrating for me as being in London, as the time difference means I have to wait until after 5pm UK time to find out.

Also my readers are very helpful. They, like me, have a passion for fashion and they recognize things and leave a comment or email me and I share it with everyone.

Fashion Time: What is the most popular brand, celebs are wearing this season on the red carpet?

Catherine Kallon: Before Cannes, I would (have) gone with Marchesa as they are such a well recognized red carpet brand. After Cannes, it is easy to say that Lanvin is by far the hottest brand of the season. When I was on holiday in April, I visited the Lanvin store and was like a kid in a candy store, wanting to touch and try everything. Those billowing dresses are even more beautiful in real life.

Fashion Time: Who’s the most recent fashion disaster on the red carpet and why?

Catherine Kallon: Nicollette Sheridan turned up to a Chanel event wearing a black and white stripey off-the-shoulder mini dress which was so hideous and so typically Nicollette. Apparently Chanel requested all photos of her not be uploaded to any photo agency sites and I understood why.I think the problem is she does not know what works best for her and because of that she thinks looking sexy is a great look, but ends up looking trashy. She has a huge problem separating her style with the style of her Desperate Housewives character Edie.

Fashion Time: If you were given a chance to step on the red carpet, what designer’s dress would you choose?

Catherine Kallon: Any dress from the Elie Saab Spring 2008 Couture collection, especially this one:

Fashion Time: Tell us about 5 luxury items you have to have in your wardrobe?

Catherine Kallon:

  • Chanel Classic Flap, which is my most treasured possession.  I still keep it in the box.
  • My Roland Mouret Moon dress
  • My YSL Y-Mail purse, which is big enough to pass off as a clutch
  • My Louis Vuitton Olympe bag
  • My Giambattista Valli knit dress

Fashion Time: What celeb is the most elegant on the red carpet?

Catherine Kallon: Cate Blanchett, but Charlize Theron, Lucy Liu, Eva Mendes, Gwyneth Paltrow and Camilla Belle are all giving my favourite girl a run for her money.

Fashion Time: What are your thoughts on the beauty and fashion magazines photoshopping so many of the images we see?

Catherine Kallon: Most people like myself look at magazines to see beautiful things. If a spot or a few wrinkles have been retouched so be it, but if the photoshopping makes that person unrecognisable then I have a problem. I remember when Kate Winslet spoke about the airbrushing they did on her for the cover of GQ. She said she was mortified as she did not recognise herself.

Fashion Time: Which Celebs are the biggest trend-setters in Fashion?

Catherine Kallon: The biggest trendsetter this season was Gwyneth Paltrow with her gladiator heels, now everyone is wearing them.

Fashion Time: Amy Winehouse and her tatts: Good look or bad look?

Catherine Kallon: Bad look, I hate tattoos.

Fashion Time: What is your favorite fashion magazine and why?

Catherine Kallon: I love Elle magazine. Visually I find it very appeasing in terms of pictures, fonts and text size. The features are not too long, and they show a lot of runway pictures, which helps refresh my runway memory. Although my picture appeared in the July 2008 edition of Vogue, and I love the magazine, it feels very much out of reach in terms of their price points on clothes and accessories that they feature. Those featured in Elle, feel like they are more accessible to me.

My other favourite magazines are InStyle and Grazia, much for the same reason.

Fashion Time: Can you name for us five overrated — from the point of style — celebs and why?

Catherine Kallon:

Lauren Conrad – You can walk down any street in LA or London and see many girls with a similar look. The only thing I like about her is her large Chanel flap bag.
Nicole Richie – Yes she looks great on the red carpet every now and then, but her looks is very much a look that was created by Rachel Zoe, and now that look can be seen everywhere.
Agyness Deyn – I am still in shock that Tatler Magazine named her the Best Dressed Celebrity of the year.
Beyonce Knowles – I think she has no style nor taste. Her House of Dereon collection proves that.I think everyone gets blinded by her bootie.
Kate Moss – Yes she does look great at times, but it is always the same. Short shorts, little dresses, and blazers. Everything you can see at Topshop.

Fashion Time: Can you make a living as a fashion blogger?

Catherine Kallon: I am sure some bloggers who do, but I am unfortunately not one of those people.

Fashion Time: Hottest trend in celeb wear is?

Catherine Kallon: Open-toe booties, florals, ruffles, jumpsuits, masculine suits.

Fashion Time: Who are the most celeb-friendly designers?

Catherine Kallon: Dolce & Gabbana - those corseted dresses will never go out of style, Alice + Olivia – for the young and reality TV stars, Marchesa – Red Carpet favourites.

Fashion Time: Have you heard back from any of the celebrities profiled in your blog?

Catherine Kallon: No, I would love to hear from the one’s who I talk less favourably about like Beyonce.

Fashion Time: Do you mind nudity on the front cover of fashion mags?

Catherine Kallon: If artfully done then yes.

Fashion Time: Hypothetical question: You’re hired as Agyness Deyn”s stylist. What fashion advice would you give her?

Catherine Kallon: Stop trying so hard to be cool and edgy, and just be yourself.

Fashion Time: Hair today, gone tomorrow: Which Diva possesses the best hair?

Catherine Kallon: Not Tyra Banks, that is for sure. I am more into dresses than hair, but I would say that Gwyneth Paltrow has become more interesting since her hair cut.

Fashion Time: American versus European Divas: Who are more fashionable?

Catherine Kallon: I am European, and European divas like Penelope Cruz, Monica Cruz never have an off day. So I would say we are more fashionable. Europe has created some of the greatest designers in the world. Yves Saint Laurent, Coco Chanel, Alexander McQueen and John Galliano, and Paris is said to be the Fashion Capital of the World, so this helps back my answer.
