Michelle Obama wore Isabel Toledo for the Inauguration

21 January 2009 No Comment

Michelle Obama was expected to wear either Maria Pinto, Thakoon, or Oscar de la Renta for the Inauguration ceremony, but the First Lady surprised us in a good way, when she chose a striking Isabel Toledo design.

The champagne yellow ensemble consisted of a gold-embossed coat and a yellow brocade shift dress with diamanté neckline. The coat was made of wool lace in a silk net, with silk radzimir underneath and a layer of pashmina for warmth.

Mrs Obama paired down her outfit with green patent Jimmy Choo ‘Glacier’ pumps and olive green gloves from J. Crew.

For Toledo, the designer herself, the outfit choice was completely unexpected. She created the gown with the hope,  Obama would choose it for the ceremony, though Toledo did not know for certain until Tuesday morning, reports IHT.

“There is nothing that comes close to this moment,” Toledo said, speaking in New York. “It’s not just my moment and hers, but it’s the world’s…It’s not only what she’s wearing. It’s what the moment represents.”

Toledo said she selected the “lemongrass” color for the optimism it represents.
