TOP 5 Milan S/S ‘09 Shows

By Editor • Oct 20th, 2008 • Category: Fashion View

Milan is known for its refined glamour. Italian women are well dressed, well put together, and oozing sex appeal. The clothes are of course much of the same! Although Milan can sometimes feel like the least exciting of the shows, in many ways it provides a pretty good understanding of how real women dress! Here are the top 5 Milan shows.

PRADA

There are some fashion shows that are said to have an effect on the season, to really set the tone of what the season will mean, and what the trends will be. One of these such shows is Prada. This season, Prada returns to the basics, but in such a desirable and feminine way. Trailing down the runways at Prada we see sexuality oozing from the clothes but not in a perverse way. Miuccia has somehow managed to create a controlled sexuality on her runway. The models looked feminine but not disheveled in the rumpled fabrics. The clothes themselves seemed to be almost falling off, but of course never did. The show was almost a demure tease in many ways, giving us a taste and leaving us wanting more!

ALBERTA FERRETTI

Alberta Ferretti is known for a particular brand of pretty in Milan, and this season was no exception. We saw more of her signature draping, with spurts of beautiful Grecian inspired eveningwear. The verdict? Real clothes for real women, done in a dainty way.

DSQUARED

Being Canadian myself, I have a soft spot for Dean and Dan of DSquared. The dynamic duo do overt sexuality and skin like no one else. For this season, a little dose of Charlie’s Angels was on the menu, with the collection being heavily 70’s inspired. From 70’s catsuits reminiscent of studio 54, to preppy/hipster flair the collection was fun, and definitely perfect for the DSquared girl.

FENDI

Ah, Karl does it again! Fendi was choc full of lovely bell shapes, beautiful shades of pale pastels, and of course the see-through trend running thorough SS09 was present. Origami folds, and peter pan collars added to the eccentricities. The accessories of course, are what everyone is watching and the belts, shoes and bags were gorgeous!

MOSCHINO

Moschino is known for being quirky. This season the company stayed true to its roots with over-exaggeration. From oversized bows to harlequin prints to 50’s inspired bug eyed sunglasses, Moschino hit all of the usual marks. Having said that, the show was fairly predictable and repetitive, but still true to what Moschino means to most of us!

- ALEXANDRA IANCOVICI

Alexandra is a London based Buyer/Consultant working with various luxury concept stores all over the world. She worked in the buying offices of Holt Renfrew Canada and Bergdorf Goodman early on in her career. Alexandra covers fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan, Paris and India.

  1. My one-line review of the “Top 5 Milan S/S ‘09 Shows”: An expensive collection of rags and clown suits adorning the anorexic bodies of semi-pretty teenage boys. If there’s a fashion show in Hell, this is it.

  3. I adore the bell shape that Lagerfeld highlighted in this show. So elegant and beautiful!
