The Coveted: Jennine Tamm Independent Fashion Blogger

By Editor • Aug 27th, 2008 • Category: Fashion View

Born and raised in California, currently decamped in Germany, fashion blogger extraordinaire Jennine Tamm (left) is a graduate of the London College of Communications, and founder of the much heralded The Coveted and Independent Fashion Bloggers.

The Coveted with its empathic emotive exposition has elicited strong praise and a rising fan base, whereas Independent Fashion Bloggers serves as a junction, a gathering place for independent fashion bloggers to exchange ideas and information. Together, they’ve helped to establish Jennine as one of the true renaissance woman in the Fashion Blogosphere.

We thank Jennine for taking time off from her busy schedule to participate in our Interview.

Fashion Time: The Coveted is your blog which features erudite writing and evocative images. We must ask you, what are you coveting?

Jennine Tamm: Oh my… what am I not coveting these days? These days I’ve seemed to rediscover trousers… high waisted tapered trousers and blazers. I guess that would be the menswear inspired look now that I think of it… but with a softer twist.

Fashion Time: You obviously love vintage clothing. Is there a Holy Nirvana of Vintageness for you, one ancient beguiling piece of clothing, that when you find it, all will be right in the world?

Jennine Tamm: I’m not really sure, there are so many things I would want, a Pierre Cardin space dress would be awesome I can already imagine how I would wear it. But then, I would also love the perfect beret hat, I always seem to find them, but never the perfect one.

Fashion Time: You have a shop at Etsy, appropriately entitled The Coveted Shoppe, where you sell vintage clothing. Tell us a little bit about it?

Jennine Tamm: Well, a while back I made this pact with myself to wear more recycled clothing… and since I am always shopping, I decided to give the shop a try… it’s a lot of fun.

Fashion Time: Do you have a favorite place to shop for vintage fashions?

Jennine Tamm: Right now Etsy and eBay are my favorites. I kind of like the personal touch Etsy sellers tend to give to their shops, but I could be biased. Nasty Gal Vintage also opened up her own shop, and she consistently finds great stuff.. I don’t know how she does it.

Fashion Time: You recently moved to Germany, so we must ask you, who is the hottest designer at the moment there?

Jennine Tamm: The big favorite I’m hearing people talk about is c.neeon. Which I really like the crazy graphics and amazing cuts. Personally I’m fascinated by Anuschka Hoevener, she really integrates sculpture in very wearable pieces.

Fashion Time: Jennine, you are the founder of the Independent Fashion Bloggers. What are you trying to achieve with the site and how did the genesis of the idea come about?

Jennine Tamm: Well, there’s a lot to talk about with Independent Fashion Bloggers. When I first started thinking about monetizing my bog I came across an ad network that sent me a 29 page contract full of stuff I wasn’t sure what any of it meant. I felt really alone, because many of the blogging blogs cover monetization, but mostly for the tech niche. I didn’t know if this was a bad deal or not, so I didn’t go with it. Since then I wanted to create a place for fashion bloggers to talk about those kinds of experiences… since talking about blogging may not be appropriate to talk about in a fashion blog, it’s a good place to expand the blogging experience.

Fashion Time: Fashion is like sex in which ways?

Jennine Tamm: It’s very personal, and everyone likes it, but in different ways.

Fashion Time: Camille Paglia once said, “Women’s beauty is a compromise with her dangerous archetypal allure. It gives the eye the comforting illusion of intellectual control over nature.” Do you think Camille was accurate in her assessment?

Jennine Tamm: Wow, I’ve never heard that before.. but I guess that could be true… it’s very human to try to create intellectual control over nature. Personally, I’ve always thought control was a big joke anyway… no one really has control over anything.

Fashion Time: Tell us something quirky about yourself?

Jennine Tamm: I’d like to know something that’s not quirky about myself.

Fashion Time: Which designer, dead or alive, would you like to have lunch with, dishing fashion ideas?

Jennine Tamm: I hate to be cliche, but I would absolutely love to have lunch with Coco Chanel… but then again, I’m afraid I might be too nervous in her presence.

Fashion Time: What’s the worst fashion trend you’ve ever seen?

Jennine Tamm: I’m not sure, I have a strange way of liking them all… on the right person. But to tell the truth, I think the worst fashion trend is whatever Anne Taylor belongs to. I say this as I have two vintage Anne Taylor dresses in my closet mind you. There are women out there who dress so they aren’t noticed. I just don’t get it.

Fashion Time: The most sensual smelling fragrance is?

Jennine Tamm: Vanilla of course… I love it, but people tell me when I wear it I smell like cookies. Which in my book is a good thing.

Fashion Time: Do you remember the first pair of jeans you owned?

Jennine Tamm: No not really, my mom hated when my grandmother would dress her girly as a child, so in rebellion she dressed me in jeans and adidas sneakers, which I hated. Ah, the mother-daughter relationship.

Fashion Time: What are your five desert island staples?

Jennine Tamm: Hmmm… I would say Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm, an American Apparel cotton jersey dress, a pretty silk scarf (I have a million), vintage sunglasses, oh, and probably my bronze flip-flops from Payless… the ones I bought in Hawaii, because it’s like a desert island. Sort of.

Fashion Time: If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe - past or present, fiction or reality - whose would it be and why?

Jennine Tamm: I think I would want to steal Isabella Blow’s wardrobe because she was so unique and forward thinking. She had a driving force behind her style… and my god, the hats!
