Daddy Likey Winona, We Likey Her Too

By Editor • Aug 7th, 2008 • Category: Fashion View

We likey Daddy Likey’s Winona very much indeed for her quick wit and charming sensuality. Toss in a few raging fashion hormones, sweet naivete, and an absence of malice against the world, and you have a complex, intriguing woman with more than an echo (and the bunnymen) of goodness in her heart.

Bring on the dancing horses and gallop on over to Daddy Likey. Winona is smart but not smarmy and it shines through in her stylish writings on fashion and life. And her neato father catches rattlesnakes as a hobby. Oh, that was too interesting not to mention.

We thank Winona for taking time off from her busy schedule to participate in our interview and give her a round of applause for serving as a Big Sister.

Fashion Time: What inspired you to write Daddy Likey and who’s your daddy?

Winona: Long story short: I was living with two guys in a city with no shopping and I needed an escape. So I started a fashion blog. My daddy, as I’ve mentioned on the blog, is an animal behavior scientist with an acute fear of home invasion.

Fashion Time: 3 reasons why people should read your blog?

Winona: People should read Daddy Likey because it’s honest, entertaining, and, as one of my dear readers said, “it shows that it’s NOT impossible to blog about clothes while not being a misogynist assnose!”

Fashion Time: Giving the little girl, room to breathe: This seems to be the season of chocharific couture. Is this a good trend or should the ladies
leave a little something more to the imagination?

Winona: It’s a good trend in that it keeps my Don’t Show-cha Your Chocha feature stocked with examples, but in general I’m not a fan of seeing ass cheeks and lady parts when I go out for coffee.

Fashion Time: What are your predictions for the Fall 2008 trends?

Winona: I’m seeing a lot of slouchy menswear, which I’m really excited about, as well as black blazers, detailed hosiery, and cobalt blue everything.

Fashion Time: Your favorite vintage-inspired fashion is?

Winona: I’ve always been obsessed with the styles of the 60’s and 70’s–bell bottoms, bright colors, florals, chunky heels, crazy jewelry–I love it all.

Fashion Time: If you were down to your last $10, what would you buy?

Winona: Nine lottery tickets and a peanut butter twix.

Fashion Time: Tell us something unique about yourself?

Winona: In high school my best friend and I co-founded the Jet Li Fan Club, but we kicked out all the other members within the first two weeks because we didn’t feel they were fully committed to the cause.

Fashion Time: Brush with greatness: Who is the most famous person you have encountered?

Winona: Woody Harrelson visited my college campus a few years ago in a cross-country tour to promote smoking pot and riding your bike or something along those lines. My boyfriend and I walked by his hemp-powered tour bus and decided to try to just get on and see if anyone stopped us. Nobody did, so we walked onto the bus and Woody Harrelson was just sitting there in a cloud of smoke. We said, “Hey Woody,” and he said “Hi.” Then we took a picture with him and left. It was, by far, the high point of my life.

Fashion Time: Who are the biggest hypocrites in the fashion industry?

Winona: Designers who claim to love and respect women and then put out misogynist advertising (not to mention unflattering clothes).

Fashion Time: What rule of fashion do you always break?

Winona: I wear leggings and Uggs and overalls, sometimes simultaneously. Shall I go on?

Fashion Time: If you hit the lottery, you would?

Winona: Start a mentoring center for teen girls, travel, buy an apartment in the city and a house in the country, get a pair of flats in every color of the rainbow, and fund the return of Girlshop.com.

Fashion Time: What are the five best online sites for Fashion?

Winona: Wow, that’s tough. Well, I’m a huge fan of Kingdom of Style, Fashion Is Spinach, The Sunday Best, (Into) the Fray, and Style Bubble, among many, many other fabulous fashion blogs.

Fashion Time: You wouldn’t be caught dead wearing?

Winona: Anything with the Playboy logo. Blech.

Fashion Time: You wrote a story about the History of Chewing Gum for National Geographic. Will we see you doing more work for the magazine in the future, such as an expedition to Borneo, where you’ll battle it out
with foot-long leaches, just you and your gold shoes?

Winona: I just booked my flight to Borneo, actually–those leeches better watch out! (In other news, this is the best question ever, and I really want to publish a book called Just Me and My Gold Shoes.)

Fashion Time: Your dream dress is?

Winona: One that fits me correctly. I pray every night that it’s out there somewhere.

Fashion Time: What bag are you carrying these days?

Winona: An old, dirty, gray leather drawstring satchel I found in my mom’s closet. It’s filled with a disturbing amount of receipts and the strap is frayed and it goes with everything and it’s perfect.

Fashion Time: What are your five desert island staples?

Winona: A book of 75,000 crossword puzzles, sunscreen, a journal, a Wilson volleyball, and a dentist.

Fashion Time: Biggest fashion faux pas?

Winona: In sixth grade I thought it was really cool to wear one purple sock and one pink sock with one purple Keds shoe and one pink Keds shoe. Shortly after I debuted this look, my teacher put me in a rudimentary math class, even though I always had straight A’s. Hmm…

Fashion Time: If you had a chance to dine with a designer, who would you choose and why?

Winona: Donatella Versace, just to see her face up close.

Fashion Time: Your most crazy fashion fantasy is?

Winona: A part of me really wants to become a train conductor just for the hat.
