Vogue Italia July 2008: Preview of the Black Models Issue

We remember the speculation, that the July issue of Italian Vogue would have only black models, and feature only black women of arts and entertainment. These speculations turned out to be true, as Cathy Horyn from the New York Times has a story in today’s paper with details on the upcoming issue, interviews with people who worked on this project, and some pictures.
The Italian Vogue July issue has 100 pages of photos of Chanel Iman, Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Jourdan Dunn, Liya Kebede, Alek Wek, Pat Cleveland and Karen Alexander shot by Steven Meisel.
We believe this work deserves a lot of respect, as the upcoming issue is all about showcasing the beauty and soul of black models, while against discrimination, and stereotyping them.
“Laziness, paranoia and pedantry may also have something to do with the failure to hire black models for shows and magazine features in any meaningful number, but, hey, that’s just a guess,” wrote Cathy Horyn in her story for NY Times.
“I thought, it’s ridiculous, this discrimination. It’s so crazy to live in such a narrow, narrow place. Age, weight, sexuality, race — every kind of prejudice,” said Steven Meisel, who is one of the most powerful photographers in the fashion world.
We hope this issue will change people’s views and have an impact. We believe that other magazines will follow Italian Vogue and feature more black models.
