Andy Knight: If you love denim, you’ll love Denimology
By Editor • Jun 11th, 2008 • Category: Fashion View
Andy Knight’s Denimology, created in February of 2006, is the place to be on the Internet for the latest information, trends, styles, news, opinions, gossip, and designs about Jeans and Denim, from vintage to shredded, acid-washed to punk rock, military to ultra skinny… and many more.
As Andy tells us, “I am a denim obsessive and I felt that if I produced a site totally dedicated to denim it would surely find an audience amongst people looking for the perfect pair of jeans.”
At Denimology, Andy’s almost encyclopedic knowledge of the denim industry, has gained him a boldly growing following of devoted readers and has elevated the art of jeans watching to a science. The science of Denimology.
We thank Andy for taking time off from his busy schedule to participate in in our interview.
Fashion Time: Your prediction: How much longer will skinny jeans continue to be trendy?
Andy: Forever, skinny jeans have now become a stable of ever woman’s wardrobe.
Fashion Time: Drainpipe denims: Could you explain how the name originated?
Andy: No idea. I guess they are named after drainpipes which are a similar
shape.
Fashion Time: What are the best brands of denim in the world?
Andy: For men - Samurai, Studio D’Artisan, Nudie, PRPS. For women J Brand,
Superfine, Paige, Siwy, Rich & Skinny
Fashion Time: What brand of denim is popular among today’s celebrities?
Andy: J Brand
Fashion Time: Shredded Jeans: Nice trend in Denim wear or idiotic looking?
Andy: Interesting new trend if worn correctly ie. You should look like a member of The Ramones
Fashion Time: Do you remember the first pair of jeans you owned?
Andy: Yes, I wanted a pair of Levi’s but my mom couldn’t afford them so she got me a pair of Bogart jeans off the market. They were rubbish but I got a pair of Levi’s next time.
Fashion Time: Which classic jean will never ever go out of style?
Andy: The originals - Levi’s 501s
Fashion Time: Do you pay any attention to celebrity endorsements of products?
Andy: Yes, celebrities are everywhere in the media it is hard not to be
influenced by them
Fashion Time: What’s the most important item of clothing in your wardrobe?
Andy: I have a nice pair of Samurai jeans which are wearing in nicely.
Fashion Time: What is the worst experience you had in fashion?
Andy: My mom made me wear a yellow suit with wide lapels to a wedding when I was a little kid.
Fashion Time: What’s the big denim trend right now heading into the Summer 08 season?
Andy: I am still loving coloured jeans. Skinny flares are also massive right
now.
Fashion Time: What’s your opinion of high-waisted jeans? Have they become really popular among women these days?
Andy: Yes they have become really popular and if worn correctly they can look great. If worn incorrectly they will make you look like a middle aged woman from the 1970s
Fashion Time: Third World sweatshops produce most of the denim (Levi’s for example) in the world - is this really an ethical thing?
Andy: I think a lot of denim companies out there could probably do a lot to
improve the way they produce their jeans.
Fashion Time: Which designer do you absolutely hate and why?
Andy: I don’t like to be negative about people, I did that on my site once
before and the person asked why I wrote something negative about them. I
felt terrible about it. Who am I to criticise other people.
Fashion Time: (Fill in the blank) What’s Hot and What’s Not?
Andy: Rachel Bilson is hot. Websites that print lies and negativity are not.
Fashion Time: Why has your site Denimology become so popular?
Andy: There are a lot of people out there that love denim.
Fashion Time: What would you like to say to the Fashion Time’s readers?
Andy: If you love denim you will love Denimology.
